OUR SUSTAINABILITY POLICY

1. OUR COMMITMENT

At Mexico Kan Tours, we believe that tourism should create positive experiences for travelers while contributing positively to the destinations, communities, cultures and natural environments that we visit.

With more than 20 years of experience operating in Mexico, particularly in the Yucatán Peninsula and Oaxaca, we are committed to developing tourism experiences that respect local communities, protect cultural and natural heritage, and generate meaningful economic benefits for local people.

Our sustainability approach is based on our philosophy:

TRAVEL WITH INTENTION

We aim to make responsible choices throughout our operations and continuously improve the social, cultural, economic and environmental impact of our tourism activities.

2. OUR SUSTAINABILITY PRINCIPLES

Mexico Kan Tours is committed to the following principles:

Environmental responsibility

  • Minimize waste generated during our tours and operations.

  • Reduce the use of single-use plastics whenever possible.

  • Encourage travelers and staff to use reusable water bottles.

  • Avoid leaving waste at natural, archaeological and cultural sites.

  • Encourage responsible use of water and energy.

  • Respect wildlife and natural ecosystems.

  • Avoid activities that unnecessarily disturb or harm wildlife.

  • Promote responsible behavior in protected natural areas, cenotes, beaches, forests and other sensitive environments.

Cultural responsibility

  • Respect local traditions, customs, beliefs and cultural heritage.

  • Work with local guides, artisans, cooks, producers and community organizations whenever possible.

  • Encourage travelers to interact respectfully with local communities.

  • Avoid misrepresentation or commercialization of local cultures.

  • Promote authentic cultural experiences where local communities are appropriately involved and benefit from tourism.

Social responsibility

  • Promote respectful and fair relationships with employees, guides, suppliers and community partners.

  • Support local employment and local entrepreneurship.

  • Promote equal opportunities and respectful treatment regardless of gender, age, nationality, disability, background or other personal characteristics.

  • Maintain a zero-tolerance approach to child exploitation and child sexual abuse.

  • Do not support activities involving the exploitation of children or vulnerable people.

  • Encourage our suppliers and partners to follow responsible social practices.

Economic responsibility

  • Whenever possible, prioritize local suppliers and community-based businesses.

  • Support local restaurants, artisans, guides, transportation providers and producers.

  • Encourage tourism spending to remain within the destination.

  • Develop experiences that provide direct economic benefits to local communities.

  • Maintain transparent and fair commercial relationships with our suppliers and partners.

 

3. RESPONSIBLE TOURISM EXPERIENCES

We aim to design and operate experiences that provide value to travelers while respecting the destinations in which we work.

When developing or reviewing an experience, we consider:

  • Environmental sensitivity of the destination.

  • Cultural and community considerations.

  • Local participation and economic benefit.

  • Visitor behavior and group size.

  • Safety and responsible visitor management.

  • Quality and sustainability practices of suppliers.

  • Potential negative impacts and how these can be reduced.

We particularly value experiences involving local communities, traditional knowledge, gastronomy, artisans, cultural heritage and nature conservation, provided that these activities are conducted respectfully and with appropriate community participation.

4. WORKING WITH LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Mexico Kan Tours believes that local communities should be active participants and beneficiaries of tourism.

Where possible, we:

  • Work with locally owned businesses and community-based tourism initiatives.

  • Purchase local products and services.

  • Include local guides and community representatives in our experiences.

  • Support local conservation and community projects.

  • Encourage travelers to purchase directly from local artisans and producers.

  • Respect community rules and cultural protocols.

  • Seek to understand community perspectives when developing tourism activities.

We recognize that each community has its own traditions, priorities and expectations, and therefore aim to adapt our operations accordingly.

5. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Our team and travelers are encouraged to follow responsible environmental practices.

These include:

  • Carrying out all waste generated during outdoor activities.

  • Avoiding unnecessary plastic bottles and disposable items.

  • Encouraging reusable water bottles.

  • Following designated trails and visitor routes.

  • Not removing plants, rocks, archaeological objects or other natural or cultural resources.

  • Not feeding or touching wild animals unless specifically authorized as part of a responsible conservation activity.

  • Maintaining respectful distances from wildlife.

  • Following the rules of protected areas and conservation sites.

  • Encouraging responsible use of water and other natural resources.

Where possible, we communicate these principles to travelers before and during tours.

6. PROTECTION OF CHILDREN AND VULNERABLE PEOPLE

Mexico Kan Tours is committed to protecting children and vulnerable people from exploitation and abuse.

We do not tolerate:

  • Child sexual exploitation.

  • Child labor.

  • Exploitation of vulnerable people.

  • Any tourism activity that involves inappropriate or exploitative interactions with children.

 

Our employees, guides and partners are expected to act responsibly and report any concern related to child protection or exploitation to management and, where appropriate, to the relevant authorities.

7. RESPONSIBLE SUPPLIER SELECTION

We recognize that our suppliers have an important influence on the sustainability performance of our company.

When selecting and evaluating suppliers, we consider:

  • Legal and operational compliance.

  • Service quality and safety.

  • Local ownership and employment.

  • Environmental practices.

  • Social and labor practices.

  • Respect for local culture.

  • Community involvement.

  • Sustainability certifications or recognized sustainability programs, when available.

For accommodation providers, we seek to identify whether they hold recognized sustainability certifications or demonstrate relevant sustainability practices.

Mexico Kan Tours is progressively strengthening its supplier evaluation and sustainability register to document these criteria and support future supplier-selection decisions.

8. EMPLOYEES AND GUIDES

Our employees and guides are essential to implementing our sustainability commitments.

We aim to:

  • Provide a respectful and inclusive working environment.

  • Encourage professional development and continuous learning.

  • Promote awareness of responsible tourism.

  • Communicate our sustainability principles to guides and operational staff.

  • Encourage guides to educate travelers about responsible behavior.

  • Listen to employee suggestions for improving our sustainability performance.

We encourage our team to identify opportunities to reduce environmental impacts and increase positive benefits for local communities.

9. SUPPORT FOR CONSERVATION AND COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Mexico Kan Tours contributes to local initiatives that support conservation, community development and youth activities.

Examples include support for:

  • UMA Nuevo Durango, Quintana Roo, supporting local wildlife conservation initiatives.

  • Flor y Fauna turtle conservation projects, supporting sea turtle protection and environmental activities.

  • Chacahua turtle conservation initiatives, Oaxaca.

  • Children's and youth sports teams in Quintana Roo and Oaxaca, through financial and/or in-kind contributions such as sports equipment and uniforms.

We seek to ensure that these contributions generate direct and meaningful benefits for local communities and conservation initiatives.

10. RESPONSIBLE COMMUNICATION WITH TRAVELERS

We aim to provide travelers with accurate and responsible information about our destinations, communities and experiences.

We encourage travelers to:

  • Respect local communities and cultural traditions.

  • Follow environmental guidelines.

  • Minimize waste.

  • Use reusable bottles where possible.

  • Respect wildlife.

  • Follow the rules of archaeological sites and protected areas.

  • Support local businesses and artisans.

  • Ask permission before photographing people when appropriate.

  • Avoid purchasing products made from protected species or illegally obtained cultural or natural resources.

We also communicate relevant sustainability information before and during experiences whenever appropriate.

11. CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

Sustainability is an ongoing process.

Mexico Kan Tours is committed to continuously improving its sustainability performance through:

  • Regular review of our sustainability practices.

  • Feedback from travelers, employees, guides, communities and suppliers.

  • Monitoring of relevant sustainability indicators.

  • Identification of areas where negative impacts can be reduced.

  • Increasing the participation of local suppliers and community-based initiatives.

  • Improving our supplier sustainability evaluation process.

  • Training and awareness among our employees and guides.

  • Sharing experiences and best practices with tourism stakeholders.

We recognize that we still have areas where we can improve, and we are committed to establishing measurable objectives and monitoring our progress over time.

12. MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

The General Management of Mexico Kan Tours is responsible for overseeing the implementation of this Sustainability Policy.

Management will:

  • Communicate this policy to employees and relevant suppliers.

  • Encourage the integration of sustainability into operational and commercial decisions.

  • Review progress and identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Support staff participation in sustainability initiatives.

  • Maintain relevant records and evidence of sustainability activities.

  • Review this policy periodically and update it when necessary.
