MAYAN HERITAGE & HOME OF THE PINK FLAMINGO

Ek Balam, Ria Lagartos & Valladolid

Marvel at the legacy of an ancient civilization, as we explore the past, present and future of Mayan culture.

The peaceful and inspiring Mayan temples of Ek Balam were once at the centre of an important kingdom. The site contains some wonderfully conserved monuments and exceptional architecture, making it the perfect setting to learn about this fascinating culture far from the crowds of tourists who amass elsewhere.

The standout monument is the famous Acropolis, a huge structure of stairways, private terraces, courtyards and rooms used by the city's royal family as a palace and government headquarters. The highlight is the tomb of the city's most celebrated king; a masterwork of craft & architecture engraved in polished limestone. This is one of the best conserved pieces of artwork in the whole of Mesoamerica, and well worth the visit just for a look!

Ria Lagartos & Las Coloradas make up a very important Nature Reserve, the breeding grounds for the American Pink Flamingo. Take a boat ride through lagoons, canals & mangroves populated by hundreds of species of tropical birds and plenty of crocodiles. The sight of the colony of flamingos is like a pink cloud covering the shallow water, and at Las  Coloradas you will the lagoon itself colored an amazing bright pink.

After a cool dip in the waters of a pristine cenote, we take an afternoon walk through the charming city of Valladolid. The parks and plazas, the colonial streets & chapels are full of color, offering a look at local crafts, samples of the tastiest regional cuisine and great photo opportunities of Mexican life. A very Mexican combination of art, architecture and delicious regional gastronomy.
